Can You Save with an Association Health Plan?

Monday, November 5th, 2018

As you know, our Chamber provides you and your business with resources to help make your lives a little easier.  We are always looking for valued partners who can help us provide value to our members.

One of our Chamber members approached us with an opportunity to help our members buy insurance through an association health plan at a better rate than what we could do on our own.  As you might know, there has been a lot of discussion about “Association Health Plans” in the media and the new law/Executive Order that was signed.

Our member has several insurance companies who are very experienced in providing association plan solutions to entities such as ours.  Some of the benefits of buying insurance through this plan include:

  • 5-15% lower rates than what you could get on your own
  • Renewal rate cap of 7% once we get 500 employee lives in the plan
  • All of the unused claim dollars are returned to you and your business

We are looking to kick this new Association Plan off on January 1, 2019.  In order to get started, we will need to collect information from a sample of members that will help the underwriters get familiar with us and build the rate charts they will use when underwriting members who are interested in joining the plan.

The information we will need to collect from you is:

  • Most recent renewal, showing rates, who is covered and the benefit plan (deductibles, copays, etc.)
  • Census of all eligible employees, working 30 or more hours per week.

There is no commitment at this time. We are simply gathering a sampling for the underwriters to create the rate charts. You will find attached a spreadsheet to help gather the census information. Once I receive this information from you, I will forward it to the underwriters to get the plan put together.

If I could ask you to send this information to me as soon as possible, we would like to have an informational seminar to review the benefits and review next steps (how you can sign your business up) within 30 days. Again, there is no obligation on your part to participate in the plan at this time.

A Crucial Catch Day Supports Efforts to Provide Access to Breast Cancer Education, Screening Resources

Monday, November 7th, 2016

The National Football League’s A Crucial Catch initiative has provided the American Cancer Society and select community health centers another year of funding to support increased access to breast cancer education and screening resources in underserved communities throughout the country.

The grant also supported “A Crucial Catch Day,” a community event held on Tuesday, October 25, in Aurora.

The day of the event VNA provided 23 screening mammograms. Kurt Becker, a player for the Chicago Bears from 1982 to 1988, and “Staley Da Bear”, the official Chicago Bears mascot, attended the event. Event activities included educational presentations, a healthy cooking demonstration, and free massage.

“The American Cancer Society is honored to partner with the NFL and VNA Health Care to help bridge the health disparities gap in Aurora,” said Tarneka Manning, Senior Manager, Primary Care Systems at American Cancer Society.

“Hosting this high profile event helped VNA raise local awareness about the resources available to help uninsured women obtain preventive care and life-saving screenings. The grant will allow VNA to provide screening mammograms to women in need throughout the year,” said Laura Barrett, Associate Vice President of Population Health at VNA.

Eliminating disparities in the cancer burden among different segments of the US population is an overarching goal of the American Cancer Society.  Disparities in the cancer burden among racial and ethnic minorities largely reflect obstacles to receiving health care services related to cancer prevention, early detection, and high-quality treatment, with poverty as the overriding factor.  Through our partnerships with community health systems, we are reaching communities experiencing an unequal burden of cancer by providing access to cancer education and screening resources.

Since 2012, Community Health Advocates Implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) grants funded by the NFL have been awarded to community health system partners to provide education, outreach, navigation and access to breast cancer screening within communities experiencing an unequal burden of breast cancer. These community partners have provided more than 260,000 outreach and education engagements and have contributed to more than 120,000 breast cancer screenings provided at low or no cost. This life-changing work continues over the next year with the goal to provide breast cancer education and screening resources to more women. The Society’s vision is a world free from the pain and suffering of breast cancer and all cancers, and prevention and early detection programs such as the CHANGE grant program to help eliminate breast cancer health disparities.

The NFL’s A Crucial Catch initiative is funded by the NFL with the help of its fans and partners, with the majority of the contribution coming from the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness-identified pink merchandise and also via the NFL Auction website. The American Cancer Society is the sole beneficiary of the NFL’s proceeds from merchandise sales and auctions. The NFL does not profit from the sale or auction of pink merchandise. For more information, visit nfl.com/pink.

Healthcare: Mental Health

Saturday, November 5th, 2016

Illinois gets $1.3 million federal grant aimed at improving oversight of mental health coverage. The State of Illinois is currently undertaking a series of initiatives, including a request for a major Medicaid waiver, aimed at helping Illinois residents with behavioral and mental health challenges. The Illinois Department of Insurance announced on Wednesday, November 2, that they have received a favorable response on the Department’s request for a $1.3 million grant aimed at improving the Department’s computer software. The new software will generate data on how private-sector insurance firms are responding to the mental health needs of their policyholders, and will track consumer complaints and appeals.

Get Out the Vote this November
The business community and Aurora Chamber need your help to turn out the vote for Illinois’s upcoming elections. As Election Day draws near, voters will seek credible information about how to get involved in the process – something that Chamber members can easily provide their employees through the Illinois Prosperity Project.

Believe it or not, 31% of employees surveyed ranked their current or former employer as the most credible source for information on political and public policy issues. To top that off, for employees who heard from their employer during the 2014 Midterm Election, 63% of them were motivated to learn more about the issues that were important to their employer and/or 43% were motivated to register to vote.
