Public Policy Updates

Every vote matters.

In three weeks, voters have a wide range of issues to consider: the state of the economy, taxes, regulations and legislative initiatives, and the overall political landscape in Springfield and Washington. Whatever your reason for voting, there has never been a more important time to make your voice heard.

On Nov. 6, Illinoisans will go to the polls to elect our representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives, State Constitutional officers, Illinois General Assembly members, and County Board members.

By being a part of the political process, we can elect officials who are willing to get things done in support of pro-growth policies that promote opportunity and job creation for our region. The business community has too much at stake to sit on the sidelines.

The single most powerful tool each one of us has is our voice and our vote.

What makes your product or service impactful for businesses?

We are the best thing to happen on your worst day! We are here to safeguard what matters most and provide peace of mind in the neighborhoods where we live and work.

How do you encourage innovation?

We start by investing in the latest technology and mobile automation. But much more than new technology, we invest in advancing our staff’s knowledge and expertise in order to bring creative ideas and solutions to our clients’ insurance and risk management program.

What are the most interesting challenges your team is working to address?

It’s challenging to continue to provide our “high touch” service in a technology driven world. While we pride ourselves on being available to our clients, many are now looking for new ways to interact with our staff other than on the phone, by email or in person. We are exploring texting, soon to offer a chat box from our website, just launched a mobile app and currently interact with clients and prospects alike through social media.

What makes your product or service impactful for businesses?

For more than 10 years the founders of Umbrella Technologies have created innovative products within the security industry including HD cameras, video management software, and business intelligence analytics. Time and time again we have gotten a first-hand look at the core frustrations of end-users. We saw an incredibly urgent need to create true convergence of their security technologies. We have seen them been provided unrealistic expectations, ridiculous price gouging, inconsistent service and support, and even complete project failure! Finally, we said “ENOUGH!” and decided to bring our best individuals together to create the perfect solution. That solution is Umbrella Technologies. The mission of Umbrella Technologies is to fulfill the growing demand of true security system integration bridging the gap between physical and cyber security infrastructure. Unlike other companies, we have the experience, knowledge, and proper technology to make sure every single area is covered!

How do you encourage innovation?

Understanding the problem before implementation is our code. Our team handles each project with great care and patience. Every project is a puzzle that needs to be solved. The answers to these puzzles belong to those who are willing to work hard to figure them out. The team at Umbrella Technologies is always devising innovative and creative solutions, for both new and returning customers. Every single day, we hear phrases such as “I’ve been in the industry for 20 years, so I must know what I’m doing!” every single day. Well, 20 years ago everything was completely different. To be honest, everything was completely different even three years ago! We do not carry the attitude of knowing it all, but success is the reward to individuals who are continuously prepared – and we always come prepared!

What are the most interesting challenges your team is working to address?

The convergence of physical and cyber infrastructure security.

The Aurora region has a long history of innovation — from the first city with electric streetlights throughout and the first free public school district in the state to the 45-mile fiber optic ring and Aurora Regional Pathways. Our community — and its residents and employers — know that innovation is key to the economic development of the region for healthcare, manufacturing, education, small business, and more.

On Friday, Oct. 19, The Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce will focus on the State of Business: Innovation. AURORA NAMED FINALIST FOR CHICAGO INNOVATION AWARDS

Chicago Innovation Awards

The City of Aurora has been named a Top 100 Finalist for the 2018 Chicago Innovation Awards. During a special reception held in Chicago with the 519 nominees, the Chicago Innovation Awards committee selected Aurora as one of the Top 100 Finalist to advance in the annual competition that recognizes innovators in the region.

The general public can vote for a People’s Choice Award winner by visiting https://chicagoinnovation.com/peoples-choice-award-voting/. Supporters of the City of Aurora are encouraged to vote by October 5. Aurora is listed in the Neighborhood Awards category on the voting site.

The City of Aurora was nominated for its fiber optic network – operated by OnLight Aurora – which has enhanced the business climate of the state’s second largest city while serving the connectivity needs of Aurora’s schools, healthcare providers, social service agencies and other community anchor institutions. In addition, the City’s commitment to technology, improvements in the IT Department and plans for an Open Data Portal were significant factors in the decision of the panel of judges.

US CHAMBER LAUNCHES EDUCATION, WORKFORCE FELLOWSHIP

The U.S. Chamber Foundation Fellowship will provide new opportunities for state and local chambers to engage at a national level on critical education and workforce issues.

Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Joseph Henning, IOM, CAE, recently attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s inaugural premier business leadership program to help address the most pressing education and workforce issues.

“State and local leaders know better than anyone the critical link between education and economic development,” said Cheryl Oldham, senior vice president of the Center for Education and Workforce. “We created this program to help these leaders find opportunities to develop initiatives that will advance the growth of their local economy and put education policy into practice.”

Following a competitive application and selection process, 35 state and local chamber executives were chosen for the inaugural class of Business Leads Fellows from nearly 150 applicants. The four-month fellowship covers the entire talent pipeline, including early childhood education, K-12, higher education, and workforce development.

The Peoria Journal Star reports ‘Illinois residents pay more taxes than any other state.’ The fact that Illinois residents are heavily taxed isn’t a secret. WalletHub, a national personal finance service, recently ranked Illinois as 51st in the nation in terms of the severity of its overall tax burden — that’s last among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. According to WalletHub, the state and local tax on an Illinois household earning the median U.S. income is 14.89 percent, the highest in the nation.

The median Illinois household pays $8,330 in taxes annually — not counting federal taxes. Among Midwestern states, Wisconsin is next at $7,193. But the tax burden on median households is almost 40 percent higher in Illinois compared to most of its neighbors, states WalletHub. The Tax Foundation lists Illinois as having the second-highest property taxes in the country, second only to New Jersey.

#AuroraChamber Shared Interest Groups: The Aurora Chamber has several existing and soon-to-launch Shared Interest Groups designed with our members in mind. The newest SIG to launch is the Retail Roundtable. In partnership (and sponsored by Fox Valley Mall), the Retail Roundtable is designed to support retailers by creating an atmosphere of knowledge sharing among peers as well as presentations by subject-matter experts geared to the retail environment. The first meeting is shcheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Fox Valley Mall Food Court. For details, contact Maureen Gasek, director of events and marketing, at the Chamber.

Partnering For Our Community

So another great accolade for Aurora! Among the criteria used for selection:

• Commerce and the supply of good jobs for residents;
• An interesting art scene and rich cultural history;
• A “lovely place” where people want to live or visit;
• A surprise unique “gem” — in the case of Aurora, they cite the focus on academics and intellectual discovery;
• And finally, a community “often overlooked for their more famous neighbors”.

2018 State of Business: Innovation

Friday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Belle Salle Banquets, 1920 E. New York Street, Aurora

Register Here

The Aurora region has a long history of innovation — from the first city with electric streetlights throughout and the first free public school district to the 45-mile fiber optic ring and Aurora Regional Pathways. Our community — and its residents and employers — know that innovation is key to the economic development of the region for healthcare, manufacturing, education, small business, and more.

On Friday, Oct. 19, The Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce will focus on the State of Business: Innovation. The first of its kind summit will include exhibitors spotlighting their innovation through products and services, panels of innovators sharing their experiences, and our Annual Celebration of Membership at noon.

Keynoting the morning will be Thomas D. Kuczmarski, president and founder of the global consulting firm Kuczmarski Innovation and an internationally recognized expert on innovation. During the course of his career, he has helped hundreds of clients, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 corporations, learn to systematically unlock the value of innovation.

Kuczmarski teaches product and service innovation at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University where he is Senior Lecturer and Visiting Scholar in the Center for Innovation and Technology. For 38 years, his executive education courses at the Kellogg School have attracted leaders from around the world.

Kuczmarski is co-founder of the Chicago Innovation Awards, which annually celebrates, educates, and connects innovators in the Chicago region. The awards showcase the creative spirit of the heartland. He is the author of seven books on innovation and leadership and frequently appears on radio and television, and in periodicals around the world. He earned an M.B.A. and an M.I.A from Columbia University.

Illinois has long been a leader as the birthplace of groundbreaking inventions including the cell phone, the wireless remote, and the first-ever web browser. Our state is a place where ideas become patents, businesses, and life-changing technologies.

The state’s history of innovation continues today thanks to its robust digital infrastructure, venture capital networks, and continually growing talent base. In fact, Illinois is the second largest producer of computer science graduates in the country, awarding nearly 10 percent of the nation’s computer science degrees, and ranks fifth in the nation for access to capital, according to CNBC’s Best States for Business 2017.

Tariffs Could Cripple Illinois Economy

According to media and business organizations, American businesses and consumers may bear the brunt of the emerging global trade war. These reports continue that tariffs are not the answer and can inflict great harm on our economy. The United States Chamber of Commerce stresses the U.S. needs free and fair trade; imposing tariffs to get there is the wrong approach.

Tariffs on steel, aluminum, and Chinese imports — as well as additional tariffs on automobiles and auto parts — have impacted business operations across the country. Long-standing trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, the European Union, and China, have already (or express plans to) respond with billions of dollars in tariffs on American-made products.

The U.S. Chamber estimates current and proposed tariffs could cost Illinois more than $4.3 billion. Did you know, Illinois exports annually:

  • More than $156 million dollars of bread, pastries, cakes, etc., to Canada?
  • More than $128 million in herbicides and antisprout chemicals to Canada?
  • More than $56 million in food preparations to Mexico?
  • More than $445 million in passenger vehicles to China?
  • More than $57 million in cooking appliances to Europe annually?

Millions of American jobs depend on our ability to trade with other companies. Did you know that more than 1.7 million Illinois jobs are supported by global trade?

How does (or will) the global trade tariffs impact you and your business? Share your experiences with us here. This brief survey should take less than three minutes to complete.

Join Us in Support of Future IT Careers

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

The City of Aurora, in partnership with the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce, has submitted a grant application to Illinois DCEO in support of creating IT pathways opportunities for out-of-school youth (between 18 and 24 years of age) who hold either a high school diploma or GED. Two training cohorts of up to 20 participants each are planned.

Participating youth will develop skills sets in data entry, word processing, help desk functions (hardware and software), as well as other administrative tasks.

Part of the program is to identify placements for short-term internships with local employers.

Short-term paid internships will be covered by the grant. It allows employers to “try before you buy” similar to the current Manufacturing Careers Internship Program. For either program, there is no further obligation to the employer upon completion of the internship.

Internships are 160 hours – either four weeks of 40 hours or part-time. Again, the $13.29 wage per hour plus associated benefits (as applicable) will be covered by the grant.

Please contact Adrienne Holloway, City of Aurora Chief Innovation Officer, or Joseph Henning, Aurora Chamber President, if you are interested in participating.

We look forward to partnering with you to further expand workforce development opportunities and further our region’s economy.
