Public Policy Updates

Throughout the general election campaign last year, then-candidate JB Pritzker advocated for the need for Illinois to amend its constitution to scrap the current flat-tax and, instead, allow the state to create and impose a graduated income tax. During the campaign, he avoided questions as to what rates he would suggest repeatedly stating that such rates had to be negotiated with the Assembly. Today, the Governor’s Office released their suggested plan although the plan was not negotiated with the leaders – at least to this point. You can peruse the proposed plan here.

Leadership Is Service

Thursday, March 7th, 2019

What comes to mind when you imagine leadership? Independence? Influence? Authority? Recognition? Success? Yes, oftentimes leadership encompasses these ideas. However, when I envision leadership, I see service. Putting others before myself. Training and empowering others while not being afraid to replicate myself in them.

Throughout and after graduating from college, I wanted to prove that I could be a great leader. I loved the topic of leadership and thought that I had counted the cost, searched my soul, faced my giants and was ready to help people become the best versions of themselves possible. However, I had so much more to discover. Not only did I have to overcome my own insecurities, but I had to persuade others to do the same.

Learning to communicate authentically and display vulnerability were often difficult tasks because it went against my instinct to look out for myself. I encountered failure and discouragement and questioned whether I was on the right path altogether. Nonetheless, I pressed forward. I continued to treat people with the utmost respect even when I did not want to. I learned through my failures what it meant to build trust and display equity.

While sitting in Leadership Academy today listening to Maureen discuss networking strategies, I realized that I had been displaying leadership qualities the entire time that I was having trouble seeing myself as a leader. We talked about intent and my mind went into overdrive. Why am I here? Why do I want to pursue this? Why is this important to me? It all came back to me. I have vision! I have something to share and someone to serve!

Leadership is more than a title or talent. It is service. Existing leaders, and those aspiring to become leaders, are fundamentally people who serve others. Service directs their efforts to sell, create, build, influence and mobilize. Whether you’re a natural born leader or building yourself up to be one, regardless of ethnicity or gender, the intent for leadership should always be service.

I’m grateful to the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce for creating a program that allows people to serve and enhance themselves, their employers, and the community. I sense the spirit of service in the ideas discussed, the vulnerability revealed, and the overwhelming support for each other.

Omar Ramos is the Program & Administrative Support Coordinator at Waterford Place Cancer Resource Center, which is part of Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora. The center provides free services and support to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Omar earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Robert Morris College and has 25 years of experience working for Rush Copley. He lives in Aurora with his wife Ruth, and their four children.

TWO MANUFACTURING PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT YOUTH, EMPLOYERS

The Aurora Regional Chamber is proud to announce two beneficial programs for member manufacturers. The partnership with Business Career Services will launch the next series of Manufacturing Careers Internship Program. Manufacturers are needed to offer site tours to participants. In addition, manufacturers are invited to offer eight-week internships for the youth between 18 and 24 years of age. There is no obligation for the manufacturer to hire the intern. BCS is the employer of record and handles the wages, insurance, and drug screening.

A second program to launch is the Kane County MCIP Second Chance Program. The program is designed to help young adults ages between 18 and 24 convicted of non-violent crimes, such as DUI or driving without a license, overcome the barrier of having a criminal record and re-enter society through starting careers in the manufacturing industry. Again, there is no cost obligation for the manufacturer during the eight-week internship. BCS covers wages and liability insurance.

Public Policy Updates

Last Wednesday at noon, Gov. JB Pritzker delivered his first Budget Address in which he laid out his priorities for the Illinois Fiscal Year 2020 budget. Plenty of new spending was proposed. New spending totaling at least $4.6 billion is proposed for early childhood programs ($140.8 million), K-12 education ($382.25 million), higher education ($161.4 million), health and human service programs ($437.85 million), criminal justice reforms ($10 million), public safety ($108.8 million), and infrastructure ($3.37 billion). Pritzker proposed more than $1.1 billion in new revenues and claimed that if these revenues were not approved GRF spending would have to be cut 4% excluding employee healthcare, pensions, and debt service costs. Bill McSkimming, president of River Front Chrysler Jeep Dodge, proudly announces the dealership’s 30th anniversary. In 1989, McSkimming opened the doors to his Chrysler Plymouth store then located at 1261 N. Lake Street in Aurora. The dealership moved to its current 36,000 square foot, state of the art location in the North Aurora Auto Mall on Easter weekend 1996. Expansion has taken place with the acquisition of Jeep in 1994 and Dodge in 2009 and Chrysler Corporation’s transformation of Ram into a separate line. This growth and increase in available inventory necessitate the need for use of nearby storage lots.
