Join Us in Support of Future IT Careers

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

The City of Aurora, in partnership with the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce, has submitted a grant application to Illinois DCEO in support of creating IT pathways opportunities for out-of-school youth (between 18 and 24 years of age) who hold either a high school diploma or GED. Two training cohorts of up to 20 participants each are planned.

Participating youth will develop skills sets in data entry, word processing, help desk functions (hardware and software), as well as other administrative tasks.

Part of the program is to identify placements for short-term internships with local employers.

Short-term paid internships will be covered by the grant. It allows employers to “try before you buy” similar to the current Manufacturing Careers Internship Program. For either program, there is no further obligation to the employer upon completion of the internship.

Internships are 160 hours – either four weeks of 40 hours or part-time. Again, the $13.29 wage per hour plus associated benefits (as applicable) will be covered by the grant.

Please contact Adrienne Holloway, City of Aurora Chief Innovation Officer, or Joseph Henning, Aurora Chamber President, if you are interested in participating.

We look forward to partnering with you to further expand workforce development opportunities and further our region’s economy.

Kane County 2018 Exports Grant Program

Sunday, July 15th, 2018

In May 2015, Metro Chicago Exports (MCE) announced the launch of a Grant Program to help small and mid-sized businesses grow in international trade, specifically through exports. The Metro Chicago Exports Grant Program, presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co., awards grants up to $5,000 to businesses throughout Northeastern Illinois. This innovative and successful grant program has been renewed for 2018.

The Kane County Exports Grant Program provides an additional incentive for Kane County companies to start or increase exporting. Companies located in Kane County which apply for, and are awarded, a grant from Metro Chicago Exports, would be eligible for up to an additional $5,000 from Kane County to reimburse 50% of eligible expenses associated with implementing an export plan.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

Companies located in Kane County which are awarded a grant from Chicago Metro Exports.

WHAT GRANTS COVER

Grant awards up to an additional $5,000 to reimburse 50% of eligible expenses to support the company’s next steps to going global. Grant awards may also cover a Kane County company’s participation in the ExporTech© program.

WHERE BUSINESSES CAN APPLY

Program information and applications are available at www.MetroChicagoExports.com. More information about ExporTech can be found at https://www.nist.gov/exportech.

PROCESS FOR KANE COUNTY COMPANIES REQUESTING ADDITIONAL FUNDS FROM KANE COUNTY

  • Metro Chicago Exports’ application process involves two steps – an initial online Client Assessment and a formal Grant Application review of export plans, capabilities and potential. Companies that pass the Client Assessment phase will be invited to submit more comprehensive information about their plans to go global as part of the Grant Application process.
  • Companies located in Kane County may request up to $5,000 in additional funding for eligible activities and/or services by including them in their Grant Application to Metro Chicago Exports.
  • MCE will review the applications along with other regional applications.

ON TO 2050 Public Comment Period Now Open

A draft of ON TO 2050 is now available for public comment through August 14, 2018, at www.cmap.illinois.gov/ONTO2050, where you will be able to explore the draft plan online, download a full PDF, view the plan’s technical appendices, and submit feedback. The plan is divided into five chapters, which are further divided into goals and recommendations. ON TO 2050′s three principles of Inclusive Growth, Resilience, and Prioritized Investment inform all of its recommendations, cutting across the plan’s goals for community, prosperity, environment, governance, and mobility.

Once the public comment period closes, the plan will be revised based on feedback received, its print and online design will be finalized, and it will be prepared for adoption by the CMAP Board and MPO Policy Committee on October 10, 2018. The joint meeting will be followed by a celebration that all residents are invited to attend in downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park.

Attend an ON TO 2050 Open House

While the draft ON TO 2050 plan is available for public comment, please attend one of 10 public open houses in a community near you or join CMAP for a public hearing in Chicago. Attendees will be able to discuss the draft plan with CMAP staff. CMAP will also seek comments on the draft 2019-24 Transportation Improvement Program and air quality conformity analysis of proposed transportation projects.

For all open houses and public hearings, please contact onto2050@cmap.illinois.gov or (312) 386-8802 with questions or to request accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

General Assembly Update

The 2018 Spring legislative session wrapped up for the first time in three years with a full, appropriated fiscal year budget. This session had a tumultuous beginning as everything from the #metoo movement and primary election politics played crucial roles in bill introductions.

While taxes dominated much of 2017, employment law issues stole the limelight in 2018. The General Assembly continues to give lip service to structural reforms such as workers’ compensation and property tax relief. However, on the whole the business community came out okay in the budget agreement, in the sense that we escaped any new tax burdens. The good news is that the budget does not contain any tax increases either in the form of rate increases or elimination of beneficial aspects of the federal tax reform law.

2018 is an election year. There was no doubt that lawmakers wanted to get out of Springfield on time and rest up before the November elections. This election year will become one of the most contentious and costly gubernatorial elections in the nation’s history. It will be a wild ride, and only a matter of time before our airwaves are covered with campaign commercials.

The Chamber has been monitoring nearly 100 pieces of legislation in Springfield this session. Highlights may be found on our blog.
