Aurora Named a Top 100 Finalist for the Chicago Innovation Awards

Vote online for Aurora to also receive the People’s Choice Award

The City of Aurora has been named a Top 100 Finalist for the 2018 Chicago Innovation Awards.

During a special reception held in Chicago with the 519 nominees, the Chicago Innovation Awards committee selected Aurora as one of the Top 100 Finalist to advance in the annual competition that recognizes innovators in the region.

Judges will select the final winners in 5 categories. The general public can vote for a People’s Choice Award winner by visiting https://chicagoinnovation.com/peoples-choice-award-voting/. Supporters of the City of Aurora are encouraged to vote by October 5. Aurora is listed in the Neighborhood Awards category on the voting site.

“We are honored to be named a finalist in the Chicago Innovation Awards,” said Mayor Richard C. Irvin. “Our IT team has been focused on innovation in technology since we took office nearly 500 days ago. So much progress has been made and many national collaborations have been formed during the process. As we continue to grow as a technology leader in the region, nods like this from the Chicago Innovation Awards prove we are on the right track.”

The City of Aurora was nominated for its fiber optic network – operated by OnLight Aurora – which has enhanced the business climate of the state’s second largest city while serving the connectivity needs of Aurora’s schools, healthcare providers, social service agencies and other community anchor institutions. In addition, the City’s commitment to technology, improvements in the IT Department and plans for an Open Data Portal were significant factors in the decision of the panel of judges.

“Fiber is the fourth utility and our fiber optic network is one of Aurora’s greatest assets,” said Aurora’s Chief Information Officer Michael Pegues. “Mayor Irvin has set an ambitious goal to make the City of Aurora a regional technology hub, and our IT team and partners are diligently driving these smart city efforts.”

The Top 100 Finalists will each be awarded a scholarship to “The Practical Innovator” at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. Valued at $2,500, this day-long education course teaches the practical skills of innovation at its internationally known executive education facility.

Winners will be announced at the 17th annual Chicago Innovation Awards held at Chicago’s Harris Theater on Monday, October 29, with nearly 1,500 business and civic leaders, and supporters of innovation in attendance.

Last year, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora won a 2017 Chicago Innovation Award for its IN2 Innovation Center.

Applications for Export Assistance Now Open

MCE’s complimentary export assistance programs help businesses reach their export potential by providing a range of financial, networking, and training support. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis from now through September 30, 2018.

As of April 1, 2018, Metro Chicago Exports is now a part of a new economic development organization – the Chicago Regional Growth Corporation (CRGC). Within the new organization, MCE’s exporting programs will continue to provide valuable resources to businesses throughout the region.

Kane County 2018 Exports Grant Program

In May 2015, Metro Chicago Exports (MCE) announced the launch of a Grant Program to help small and mid-sized businesses grow in international trade, specifically through exports. The Metro Chicago Exports Grant Program, presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co., awards grants up to $5,000 to businesses throughout Northeastern Illinois. This innovative and successful grant program has been renewed for 2018.

The Kane County Exports Grant Program provides an additional incentive for Kane County companies to start or increase exporting. Companies located in Kane County which apply for, and are awarded, a grant from Metro Chicago Exports, would be eligible for up to an additional $5,000 from Kane County to reimburse 50% of eligible expenses associated with implementing an export plan.

Companies located in Kane County which are awarded a grant from Chicago Metro Exports.

WHAT GRANTS COVER

Grant awards up to an additional $5,000 to reimburse 50% of eligible expenses to support the company’s next steps to going global. Grant awards may also cover a Kane County company’s participation in the ExporTech© program.

PROCESS FOR KANE COUNTY COMPANIES REQUESTING ADDITIONAL FUNDS FROM KANE COUNTY

  • Metro Chicago Exports’ application process involves two steps – an initial online Client Assessment and a formal Grant Application review of export plans, capabilities and potential. Companies that pass the Client Assessment phase will be invited to submit more comprehensive information about their plans to go global as part of the Grant Application process.
  • Companies located in Kane County may request up to $5,000 in additional funding for eligible activities and/or services by including them in their Grant Application to Metro Chicago Exports.
  • MCE will review the applications along with other regional applications.

Technical Assistance to Boost Small-Scale Manufacturing

Free technical assistance for communities pursuing economic development through small-scale manufacturing 

When small-scale manufacturing is stitched into the fabric of a community, it enlivens community spaces and makes the economy more resilient by diversifying the market and providing higher wage jobs. Encouraging more small-scale manufacturing on main street or in other close-in, walkable neighborhoods can foster entrepreneurs and homegrown industries. These businesses create well-paying jobs for people with a variety of education and skill levels, and bring vitality to main streets and neighborhood centers-creating a foothold for future growth.

In partnership with the U.S. Economic Development Administration and Recast City, Smart Growth America is offering free technical assistance to community leaders interested in using small-scale manufacturing to help revitalize a downtown or neighborhood and create economic opportunity.

Applications for this technical assistance will be accepted until June 29, 2018 at 5 p.m. EST. Applications can be filled out online here or by downloading the PDF and returning it via email to info@smartgrowthamerica.org.

The Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce — in partnership with the City of Aurora and Metra as well as other organizations — will provide small business owners the opportunity to meet and network with prime contractors, subcontractors and assist agencies.

This event will provide one free educational workshop: DBE Certification  101. This workshop will discuss Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) qualifications, as well as, the documents that are needed when submitting a certification application and how to avoid common mistakes.

IN2 Design Thinking: Crafting the Perfect Lemonade Stand

Imagine yourself in charge of creating the most successful lemonade stand possible. Where do you even begin? What recipe do your customers want? Where do you setup your lemonade stand? All those questions and more will be answered in this fun yet informative hands-on entrepreneurship workshop. Join us as we explore how techniques that real companies use to sketch their products like Design Thinking can be applied to outline the perfect lemonade stand. And yes…you will be making lemonade. Presented by IMSA eleMENT students.

Are you an inventor, an artist, or a future engineer? In the modern world, that means you need to know 3D Modeling and CAD software. This workshop teaches you 3D modeling fundamentals and sets you on the path to making your own designs in less than an hour. Draw gear assemblies for robots, create action figures to 3D print later, or design your own dream house. We’ll use the free-for-students Autodesk Fusion 360 to teach you the basics and get you ready to design on your own. We provide the technology, you provide the awesome ideas. Laptops provided.

 

IN2: Startup Mystery Box Challenge

We have a box full of __________ (it’s a surprise). Once you open the box, you have 90 minutes to think like an entrepreneur and figure out the best thing to do with the contents. This is a simulation game, team competition that calls on collaboration, creative problem solving and entrepreneurial thinking. Practice using a Business Model Canvas, Design Thinking and Kanban methods–the same as real startups–and develop a brand that attracts interested customers who really need your product or service. Become a better problem solver and, as a team, achieve the greatest potential value for your efforts.

This winter get out of the cold and craft some holiday gifts. Learn to use technology to make your crafting faster, and more fun. In this workshop we’ll use the Silhouette Cameo Craft Cutter to design and cut our own Vinyl stickers and Holiday Cards. Try your hand at stick-on snowflakes, snowman cards, or paper reindeer ornaments. We’ll provide the materials and technology, so bring your brilliant ideas and holiday spirit.

The Illinois Chamber of Commerce International Business Council and the Business Services Division proudly present the Third Annual Export Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, at the Wintrust Financial Corporation in Rosemont.  The event will bring together top global experts serving at the highest level of government and industry to examine the most important issues involved in exporting: legal, financing, and tax implications to market considerations and distribution needs. Panelists will share their best practices and success stories to illustrate how companies can increase their global sales. This conference was designed with both small and large businesses in mind. We anticipate that attendees will be drawn from nearly every sector of the economy. We expect to host 100-200 individuals representing the leadership of small, midsize, and large companies and trade associations.
