Waubonsee Community College, Illinois Small Business Development Center is offering Government Contracting 101 at their Aurora campus. This event is free and will take place Thursday, Dec. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Advance registration is required.

AID (Association for Individual Development) is offering 2012 Holiday gift options. Great gifts for friends, family, neighbors, co-workers – anyone on your shopping list! All proceeds benefit AID.

Moose International’s Mooseheart Child City and School is hosting the Third Annual Holiday Lights at Mooseheart; a campus drive-through show with 100% of proceeds benefiting Mooseheart Child City & School from Nov 23-Dec 31,2012! The price is $10 per car (plus an additional $1/pair for 3-D glasses). The show features over 80 larger-than-life holiday characters, children-oriented figures, and mythical creatures; plus architectural lighting, throughout a two mile course on their spacious campus. This year they have bigger, better and brighter displays sure to make this event a family tradition for all visitors.

The latest edition to Arcadia Publishing’s new Legendary Locals imprint is Legendary Locals of Aurora by local author Jo Fredell Higgins. Filled with an average of 180 images and a new design, this people-centric imprint focuses on newsworthy and noteworthy individuals and groups who have built and shaped their communities. Join the Author for a Book Signing, Saturday, Dec. 8 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place, Aurora.

Naper Settlement will be sharing one of the most beloved stories of the Great Lakes on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 4:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. The Christmas Tree Ship has inspired paintings, poems, songs, television programs and a musical. Author Rochelle Pennington will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s mysterious disappearance on Nov. 22, 1912 with original photographs, artifacts raised from the sunken ship and underwater photos of the ship in its current state at the bottom of Lake Michigan. For all ages. Reservations recommended.

The beautifully decorated Martin Mitchell Mansion, on the National Register of Historic Places, is a showpiece of Naper Settlement, especially decked out in full Victorian splendor during the holiday season. Take a guided tour of the two-story Mansion and Carriage House. Saturday, Dec. 15, tours at 11, Noon, 1 and 2; Sunday, Dec. 16, tours at 1, 2 and 3. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door of the Mansion.

Naper Settlement will be sharing their Cup of Cheer tea cup and saucer collection. The Cup of Cheer Holiday House Walk is the Naperville Garden Club’s annual fundraiser, which is being held Friday, Dec. 7. The Cup of Cheer exhibit will be on display through January.

Waubonsee Community College‘s Brighter Future Scholarship will help you see a brighter future. GiGi’s Playhouse is now offering their 10 year anniversary 2013 Commemorative Calendar “Pass It On”. The Schingoethe Center at Aurora University is holding two exhibits into December: “Unyielding Light” featuring paintings and prints by Emilio Sanchez on display through Dec. 16. and “Unraveling Revelations: Decoding the Prophetic Charts” on display through Dec. 20 at the Schingoethe Art Gallery in Dunham Hall.

Naper Settlement has received the Conservation and Native Landscaping Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chicago Wilderness for the Roadways and Stormwater Management Project, completed in 2011.

Chicagoland Speedway is hosting Santa in Gatorade Victory Lane on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event is open to everyone! $10 donation is required per family to benefit the R.A.C.E. Foundation.e

The Fox Valley Marines along with Hotel Arista are hosting the 5th Annual Toys For Tots Holiday Party on Monday, Dec. 10 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Hotel Arista at 2139 CityGate Lane, Naperville. Your donation of a new unwrapped toy ($20 value) or monetary gift of $20 will entitle you to a buffet, hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and a raffle ticket.

Santa Claus will make a visit to the Fox Valley Park District Prisco Community Center from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. “Brunch with Santa” will feature a buffet-style meal. Children also will be treated to fun craft-making, holiday games and cookie decorating. Photos with Santa will be available for a small fee. Admission is $8 per resident child ($9 for adults) and $10 per non-resident child ($11 for adults).

“Super Coupon Queen” Jill Cataldo is returning to Fox Valley Park District in December and January for a pair of workshops full of money-saving tips. Cataldo will host “Super Couponing” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 and “Super Couponing 2: Saving on Everything!” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Both workshops will be held at the Eola Community Center, 555 S. Eola Road, in Aurora.

Make plans for the first two weekends in December 1, 2, 8, & 9 and be sure to experience the Blackberry Farm Polar Express! The holiday train runs from 1 to 5 p.m. free cookies and hot chocolate as well. Classic holiday music favorites play in the background throughout the event. The famous book ‘The Polar Express’ will be read by storytellers at the school house. Santa Claus will delight young visitors at the Early Streets Museum, which also will feature a holiday toy train display made from Legos.

The Grainger Foundation has donated $25,000 to Rebuilding Together Aurora to support the safe and healthy housing repair efforts in Aurora, IL. This grant will help Rebuilding Together Aurora in their efforts to provide free home repairs to low-income homeowners through a network of volunteers working to make the homes of veterans, elderly, families with small children and persons with disabilities warmer, safer, drier and more energy efficient.

Through the generous support of John C. Dunham and The Dunham Fund, and the City of Aurora’s Community Development Block Grant, Rebuilding Together Aurora is able to provide accessibility modifications and small-scale safety repairs throughout the year to low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities. The materials and labor are provided at no cost to qualified homeowners, with the goal of helping these financially and physically vulnerable families remain in safe and healthy homes.

Alfredo Martinez of Shorewood was named commercial loan officer at Old Second Bank. Operating from the downtown Aurora branch, he will manage commercial loan portfolios, provide commercial customer service, and develop commercial business for the bank.

Aurora’s Festival of Lights signature winter event has expanded to be one of the largest free outdoor light displays in northern Illinois. Families can drive through more than a mile of displays featuring a record 40,900 light bulbs during the holidays at Phillips Park, 1000 Ray Moses Drive. The Festival will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Dec. 26. The sixth annual festival is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Aurora and the City of Aurora.

IL Legislative Alert – SB 282: Corporate Tax Disclosure Legislation
Senate Bill 282 passed the Illinois Senate by a vote of 30 to 27. Aurora regional senators, Holmes, Johnson and Lauzen, each voted against it. This bill would require public disclosure of confidential business income tax return information, including a publicly-traded corporation’s Illinois base income, apportionment factor, non-business income, net operating loss information, individual tax credits claimed, and corporate income and replacement tax paid.
