Aurora University’s Schingoethe Center introduces “Bullets in the Chest, Arrows in the Back” featuring work by Artist-in-Residence Bunky Echo-Hawk. The exhibit runs through April 27.
The Aurora Public Art Commission unveiled its new art exhibit, “Dinosaurs: the Art and Science of Paleontology,” at the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place. The exhibit features the works of field paleontologist and artist Rob Sula and will showcase his natural history themed art, paleo-illustration and field-illustration (site maps.) The exhibit also explores the innate beauty of fossils and examines the craft of fossil restoration. The free exhibit is open from noon until 4:00 p.m., Wednesdays to Fridays through May 3.
A pair of neighborhood, Fox Valley Park District parks will have a new and improved look this spring. Golden Oaks Park is set to receive a series of improvements that include a newly-built picnic shelter, replacement of the current playground, a baseball backstop, a refurbished half-court basketball area and an adult fitness area. A new asphalt path will be added, running from the playground and along the edge of the five-acre lake to connect to the existing bike path along Sullivan Road. Nearby Arrow Wood Park will be receiving a new picnic shelter.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Fox Valley Park District has received the prestigious Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. Fox Valley is one of just 11 park districts to earn the honor. Nationwide, only 1.5 percent of local government agencies achieve such a distinction in the only national awards program for government budgeting. Fox Valley’s budget document was judged on how well it serves in four different categories: policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device. In earning the award, Fox Valley was rated “proficient” or “outstanding” in all four categories by a majority of judges. Also, Fox Valley was rated “outstanding” in 15 of 27 specific criteria.
Of nearly 4 million U.S. veteran households, more than 1.5 million pay more than 50 percent of their income for housing, a severe cost burden, despite having access to VA loans and other assistance. So that a local veteran family will be able to obtain simple, decent, and affordable housing, Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity, is launching a search for a local veteran family to partner in a house project. An information session for veteran and other prospective homeowners will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 30, at the FVHH office at Genesis Community Church, 1300 S. Broadway in Montgomery. Information packets and applications will be available. Childcare will not be provided.

VNA Health Care is offering a free presentation on Medicare updates for 2013 on Tuesday, March 19, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at 400 N. Highland Avenue in Aurora. The program is open to everyone and refreshments will be served. VNA offers Medicare counseling services free of charge by appointment or during drop in hours. Alden of Waterford Tuesday Lecture Series presents “Family Conflict Around Parent Care in an Aging Population: From Mediation to Litigation”.
