Behind the Scenes at the Chamber
Tomorrow marks the first of August – and students returning to school will be just around the corner. We hope everyone is able to enjoy the last days of summer before “fall” kicks in and activities begin flooding calendars.

This month, published an article titled “America is running out of workers.” With June’s unemployment at 4.4 percent and 222,000 jobs having been added, American employers are finding it more and more difficult to find and hire the employees they need to be successful.

We know that is true right here in our region. We hear from our members regularly about the struggle to hire. A number of job fairs have been held in recent weeks for positions throughout the region. And still, more are planned as our local employers continue to seek qualified employees.

The Manufacturing Careers Internship Program is set to begin this month. We are working with Business and Career Services to identify prospective students, but to also encourage our local manufacturers to host tours with the students and share what today’s manufacturing environment look like. If you are interested in participating, please call the Chamber or BCS to learn more.

Of course, with the school year beginning, we are again working with schools on the Pathways to Prosperity. We also look forward to our second year of partnering with employers to support students with disabilities and giving them work experiences to gain employment skills.

We continue to watch and weigh in with advocacy issues of importance to our business community. This includes legislation approved by the General Assembly (such as SB 1) that has yet to be sent to the Governor’s office. Stay tuned as we work to get details and updates out to you through social media and other means.

If you would like to know more about any of these activities – or more of what we are working on to support our business members, please reach out and let us know: or (630) 256-3180.

Have a great week.

Did You Know?
Did you know that our Chamber received a call recently from a lady who had two quotes for a home repair and she called to check whether these businesses were members of our Chamber as a criteria for determining which business to choose for the repair? Such calls are not uncommon for us and substantiates a national study that reveals that being active in a local Chamber of Commerce positively effects how consumers view them. These positive attributes include being perceived as more reputable, caring about their customers, and invested in the local community. As a result, according to the study, 73% of consumers are more likely to do business with Chamber members. Source: The Schapiro Group, Atlanta, Georgia. You can download our Chamber member logo through your member profile to add to your businesses promotional materials to take advantage of positive perception among your customers Chamber membership brings. Call Reba Morgan Osborne, director of membership, (630) 256-3184 for more information.
